March Fishing - Cape Fear Guide

March is known for its windy and cooler than normal temperatures, today was no exception for its was flat out cold when we were riding south down the Cape Fear River to fish for Virginia Mullet or some call them Whiting. I had Mr. E. J. Phillips and his 8 year old grandson, the goal for the day was to show the young boy that fishing could be fun ! I stopped just south of the Bald Head Island Ferry entrance in 20' of water anchored up,started setting out the light spinning rods with the standard double hook bottom rig, baited with fresh shrimp. I set out five rods, and had set back just to get me a drink of water, when the young boy asked, when are they going to start to bite, I kinda scratched my head, replied you know fishing is sometimes like Christmas you just have to be patient it will come. Before I could say anything else we had our first strike, the rod bent and the young boy picked up the rod and begin to reel, you could see the excitement, come over him.The bite improved all morning, with all the rods, getting action,I heard the child say one time during the morning that he had been fishing before, but this was real fishing ! I knew I had succeeded my goal for the charter today, for this young angler had a day of fishing he would never forget !
