Spanish Mackerel Fishing

I fished yesterday for Spanish mackerel right along the beach from Carolina Beach to Wrightsville Beach, water depth was 18' to 21' . I fish with 30 lb.test line on my reels,I use ball bearing swivels, attaching line to a number # 1 sea striker planer,on the back end of the planer I use a 100 lb. test line crimped to the planer with and addition ball bearing swivel, this allows me just to tie a loop in my line for quick reties of leader if it becomes chaffed.I like to use a 30 lb.test line for leader, I use about 30' of leader this will catch you a lot more fish, than a shorter leader,it also allows for a stretch in the line,in case a king mackerel hits the small 00-RBMSG Clark spoon ! Gold or Silver 00 Clark Spoons are my favorite spoons for Spanish Mackerel, another great spoon is the Squid Spoon #1.Trolling speed for Spanish is important,Spanish like a fast 6 knt. to 7 knt. speed, I have run a lot of Spanish mackerel charters over the last 12 years,I normally only fish 4 rods, all with #1 sea striker planers, I fish two rods short, right past the transom of the boat 5' back, one long line on the starboard side of the boat ,the port line should be run back shorter than the starboard to prevent tangles, make all your turns to the starboard side or right this will stop most of the tangles and crossed lines most people experience. If you circle a school of Spanish mackerel, you can catch your limit a lot faster, than just running through a school what is called straight lining,Carolina Beach charter boats normally catch a lot of Spanish mackerel,if you see these boats working in a circle, you know they have found the fish!

Carolina Beach Vacations

Carolina Beach is a favorite vacation spot for many people in North Carolina, with I-40 interstate, leading directly to the coast, this small coastal town offers clean beaches, for the families to swim and enjoy the ocean. Carolina Beach Fishing

I fished on the LUCKY STRIKE on Sunday 25th weather was not favorable, but the charter had only one day to fish,so it was a go ahead day ! I made my first stop, in sight of land,we dropped down with bottom rigs, caught some grey snappers, then I saw Roman Szpond from Massachusetts his rod was bent double,he had a good fish on turned out to be an amberjack.but this northerner loved the fight. We landed the amberjack,I knew it was time to move on out to 100' water depth,to find some groupers, for that was what Roman wanted to catch. It was a steady 4' wave with an occasional 6' wave but,the 34' Catamaran performed very well in the sloppy sea.I worked my spots for about an hour or so with no one hooking a grouper,I knew the fish were there,so I stepped to the back deck,I quote " I am going to show you how to catch a grouper" I pulled out my rod, rigged it with my secret rig, dropped down with in a minute I felt the grouper,I missed the fish,I fed him some line, wham! I had hooked a grouper with minutes of dropping down,I landed the black grouper, and excitement spreaded to the charter ! It was on then, that is why and experience captain that will get back and fish with the charter is so important in the success of a fishing charter. With in minutes Roman had hooked another black grouper, sometimes that is what it take to get the grouper to bite, land that first fish !

Carolina Beach King Mackerel

We are just about to Celebrate Memorial Day,I hope everyone will remember our U.S.Military for this is what keeps us free. This is also the time of year the king mackerel show up along the beaches of the North Carolina coast, these fish are moving closer to the beach with the rising water temperatures making them accessible for the small boater. These fish offer great action on light tackle, the initial strike is a long hard run, making it a favorite game fish for many anglers.Live menhaden is the preferred bait, presentation slow trolled at a speed of 1 to 2 knots. or as slow as your boat will go.Remember the lighter your terminal tackle, the more strikes you will get, light line, light drag, let the fish run,and enjoy the action when he tires, increase the drag, just a little to bring him to the boat.

Carolina Beach Black Drum

I have been fishing for black drum on the east bank of the Cape Fear River, just south of Fort Fisher, this area is a solid rock wall jetty dividing the Cape Fear River from Buzzard Bay.I fish a Carolina rig, with freshest shrimp I can find, anchor up with in casting distance of the rock wall set back and wait for the reel to scream.I fish the area on a regular basis often catching speckle trout, and red fish.

Carolina Beach Flounder

I fished Monday 19th for flounder right in the Carolina Beach yacht basin, located some small mehaden for bait, anchored my boat right to the side of a small canal entrance water was only about 2' for it was dead low tide.I mostly use 10lb.test line, power pro line, and small wire circle hooks for they are light in weight & don't inhibit the small baits at all from swimming naturally in the water. Just as soon as the tide started to come in the flounder started to bite,I caught to flounders, then the bluefish moved in and stopped the flounder bite! It was a great afternoon of fishing, the first flounders of the season, right close to where I live !

March Fishing - Cape Fear Guide

March is known for its windy and cooler than normal temperatures, today was no exception for its was flat out cold when we were riding south down the Cape Fear River to fish for Virginia Mullet or some call them Whiting. I had Mr. E. J. Phillips and his 8 year old grandson, the goal for the day was to show the young boy that fishing could be fun ! I stopped just south of the Bald Head Island Ferry entrance in 20' of water anchored up,started setting out the light spinning rods with the standard double hook bottom rig, baited with fresh shrimp. I set out five rods, and had set back just to get me a drink of water, when the young boy asked, when are they going to start to bite, I kinda scratched my head, replied you know fishing is sometimes like Christmas you just have to be patient it will come. Before I could say anything else we had our first strike, the rod bent and the young boy picked up the rod and begin to reel, you could see the excitement, come over him.The bite improved all morning, with all the rods, getting action,I heard the child say one time during the morning that he had been fishing before, but this was real fishing ! I knew I had succeeded my goal for the charter today, for this young angler had a day of fishing he would never forget !
